Descriptions of Officer and
Director Positions
Understanding the duties and
functions of our council officers and directors is essential
for both existing and prospective members. Below are brief
explanations of each position.
Officer Positions (Elected
Annually Each Fraternal Year)
• Grand Knight (GK):
The chief executive officer of the Council, responsible for
all aspects of Council operations. Presides over Council
meetings and is an ex-officio member of all committees. The
GK and FS have sign-in access to the Member Management
database on the supreme website. The GK can establish
additional committees and has a communications team to
handle newsletters, social media, and printed materials.
• Deputy Grand Knight (DGK):
Acts on behalf of the GK in his
absence and is usually appointed as the Program Director.
• Chancellor: The
third-ranking Council officer, overseeing record retention
and inventory of Council equipment. • Recorder:
Keeps the minutes of Council meetings, conducts
correspondence as directed by the GK, and maintains historic
documents. Presides at Council meetings in the absence of
the GK or DGK. • Treasurer:
Manages all funds, maintains the Council checkbook, and
makes disbursements upon receipt of payment orders from the
FS. • Advocate: Acts as
Council parliamentarian, resolving procedural matters and
being well-versed in the supreme Laws of the Order and local
bylaws. • Warden:
Ensures all members at meetings possess a current membership
card, manages Council property, and oversees meeting space
setup. Directs the activities of the inside and outside
guards. • Inside and Outside Guards:
Responsible for the security of Council meetings and
assisting the Warden. • Trustees:
Along with the GK, constitute the board of directors of the
Council. Trustees serve staggered three-year terms and
co-chair admission and retention committees. Conduct
semiannual audits forwarded to the supreme council.
Appointed Council Positions
• Chaplain: Provides
spiritual guidance. The appointment must be approved by the
local bishop, typically the parish pastor. •
Financial Secretary (FS):
Appointed for a three-year term by the Supreme Knight upon
recommendation of the GK and Trustees. Manages tax and
accounting records, collects dues, issues membership cards,
and maintains the online membership roster. •
Lecturer: Appointed by the GK,
responsible for providing hospitality and presentations at
Council meetings.
Director and
Chairmanship Positions
• Membership Director:
Oversees the admission process, efforts to retain inactive
members, and promotion of Knight insurance programs. •
Programs Director:
Coordinates the four Service Program Directors. The DGK
usually fills this position, but any member can be
appointed. Service Programs
Each council can create
unique programs within the four service areas. Here are
examples of programs suggested by the supreme office:
1. Faith Director
Programs o Spiritual development o Vocation
support o Rosary programs 2.
Family Director Programs o Food for Families o
Keep Christ in Christmas o Family of the Month/Year
3. Community Director

under the Community Director.
Description of the Knights of
Columbus (K of C) Tax Status
The Knights of Columbus Supreme Council is a tax-exempt
nonprofit organization classified as a 501(c)(8) fraternal
benefit organization. While we are a nonprofit, we are not a
qualified charitable organization for tax-deductible
contributions. However, the Columbian Foundation, a
501(c)(3) organization, can receive charitable contributions
on behalf of councils.
Each subsidiary council,
including ours, must have a federal and state tax
identification number and file nonprofit tax returns
annually.
Notes on Knights of Columbus
Insurance Programs
The K of C is a fraternal benefit organization due to
its member insurance program. The Knights have over $100
billion in life insurance policies in force, recognized as
one of the largest and best-managed insurance companies in
North America. Almost 550,000 Knights hold insurance
policies.
